You (and the others, below) are out of touch with today's theatre generation

Ariana DeBose is a bona-fide star, appealing and winning (and self-effacingly funny), telegenic and alive.

More importantly, she's a near-perfect avatar for the dynamic, queer, POC generation who's now become the premiere creative class in America. The folks who are actually shaking things up, voicing the parts of America (and the world) that have long been hidden.

I do realize that this creative shift makes older white folks feel SUUUUPER cringy and uncomfortable! It's hard to accept when you're not the cool kids anymore!

But my god, if we care about the theatre as an INDUSTRY -- an actual profession that creates and nourishes JOBS, intead of simply an art form that's found in schools and backyards and churches and libraries -- then you've got to get out the way and let America's top theatre promotion event nourish, excite, and motivate a generation who will become consumers. The folks who will keep these people employed.

You can be forgiven for never opening TikTok; if you haven't, you may not realize how much this generation already IS this keyed-in to social movements, politics, representation, and the social currents that Ms. DeBose *briefly* referenced. For them, it'd be tone-deaf not to acknowledge those things.

You are so easily offended! Are you actually theatre people?

Sorry to be living up to my name today, but my god all your reactions reinforce and illustrate just how hard these young, queer, POC's will have to work to produce any change at all within our culture.

I don't know who carefully taught you all, but you weren't listening.
