Unlike today's Tony Awards, which have 26 competitve categories, the Oscars (in their early years) had as few as 6 in some years. Grand Hotel received just a single Oscar nomination in 1931-32 and won for Best Picture. In that year there were 12 categories, but the Best Picture winner was only eligible in 7 of them.

Broadway Melody in 1928-29 and Mutiny on the Bounty in 1935 also won the Oscar for Best Picture and nothing else. In 1935 John Ford's The Informer won a total of 4 Oscars (Actor, Director, Screenplay, and Score), besting Mutiny on the Bounty's nominees in all 4 contests, yet lost in the Best Picture category.

One criticism I have heard from various theatre historians regarding the Tonys is that some voters do not possess the necessary depth of knowledge to properly determine which nominee is the best in certain technical categories.
