Mr McWhorter makes some very good points. I would say that one of the finest examples of ' non-traditional-casting on Broadway is Sam Gold's production of ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. You note t it and it disappears. Brilliant cast and production. The worst example is the NOTEBOOK. Don;t stomp me. My opinion (and that of many others) but perhaps not you.

But as I am perhaps the only theatre professional in New York who is not an Audra fan (my other blind spot is Patti Lupone), my quibble with Mr. McWhorter is on another issue. GYPSY is a great musical. Saying FOLLIES is runner up as Best American musical is, well, folly. A great score, let down by a second rate, and occasionally third rate book. But my quibble with Mr McWhorter is that I don't believe the world has moved beneath our feet. GUYS AND DOLLS remains the greatest musical.
