That is not how the Tonys or almost any theater award started. That is what they ALSO are and what they became.

And just because something won that was, for arguments sake we'll say lousy, that doesn't mean that it's meaningless or pointless. It means only that the show you (or I, or the critical majority, or whoever) thinks wasn't the best won over something(s) that were better. It doesn't invalidate any of the other things the awards are or do. And I do truly believe that the nominations are as big or in some cases (depending on how it all plays out) bigger for publicity and career boost as/than a win.
I have no interest in taking that away just because they are, inherently and at their soul, meaningless. If performers or shows were punished actively for losing or not getting a nomination, then sure... then it's a real problem how ridiculous and meaningless they actually are in terms of their stated goal of award the highest achievement in excellence. But otherwise... I think more meaningless is to argue against them existing at all. Especially as part of the argument to remove gender from acting categories...
