While I have enjoyed Guettel's work in the past, particularly PIAZZA, I did not find much to admire in the DAYS OF WINE & ROSES score. It's so tuneless (was there a melody?) outside of maybe one of the numbers ("There Go I"). I've seen all the shows nominated for Original Score and I'd put DAYS at the bottom of the list. I have returned to listen to all of the other nominees but have not been ever felt the need to listen to Guettel's score another time. If I were voting, I'd go with SUFFS which I was humming all the time the week after I saw the show. Besides being more memorable in that way, I feel this score was best integrated into the show and does what a musical theatre score should do with both developing character and advancing the story.

On the other hand, I agree with your assessment regarding O'Hara. Such an exquisite, heartbreaking performance that none of the others touches.
