It looks like Audra is playing a Black woman in this production, and it looks like some of the casting speculation (Louise have a darker skin tone than June; Herbie being white) is happening. The more I think about it, the more I think this production, under the experienced hand of George C Wolfe, could really be a revelation. Rather than being just another production of Gypsy, this production could really explore the racial dynamics of the time and what it meant to be a Black single mother trying to make her way in an industry controlled by white men. Of course, she's pushy and abrasive -- she had to be if she wanted to be taken seriously in this world (or at least that's the way she looked at it). And Herbie just doesn't get it at all.

I thought the speculation that June and Louise had different fathers was interesting. That brings in a whole additional layer of subtexts if June's father is white and Louise's father is Black. And I love the idea that the final stop is on the chitlin circuit -- to this Rose, there would be nothing worse.

There is so much subtext that could be presented in this version. Audra, as we all know, has the acting skills to play a thousand subtexts at once. Rose's Turn could be one for the ages. And if Paul Giamatti is really being cast, he can play a thousand subtexts, too. This production really could make us think about Gypsy in an entirely new way. I can't wait to see it.
