She started off as a traditional leading lady in films that didn't really showcase her to stand out. She left Hollywood to do stage work, including the huge hit "Pajama Game", and later came back to Hollywood in parts that really showed off her sparkle in showy roles. She is especially terrific in "Silk Stockings"--singing and dancing with Fred Astaire, "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" and the Bob Hope comedy "Bachelor in Paradise". It's funny that the role Doris Day did in "Romance on the High Seas", originally meant for Betty Hutton, would have actually been a good fit for Paige (who played a more sedate role in the film); the role made Day a movie star in fact. But Paige had a wonderful career -- doing "Mame" on Broadway and lots of roles on stage, screen and tv over the years. I guess she herself knew she was capable of more than the studios, since she was always looking for openings to dazzle a bit in some of these early films and let loose. Glad she found many opportunities later on, as she was always enjoyable to watch. Rest in peace.
