Embarrassingly, I have never read the book, but the line you reference clearly inspired some of the major gestures in this adaptation. The opening sequence is a sort of jazzy/steampunk take on The Great Migration (stopping just short of "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot") and there is a final twist that my subsequent research suggests is new to this telling of the story which sort of bookends the whole thing as being "a story of the West after all."

I firmly believe, however, that one of the hallmarks of a successful adaptation is that it can satisfy both those familiar and unfamiliar with the source material.

Don't get me started on the lyrics. There was a sale at the imperfect rhyme store and they bought everything.
