| Finally caught up with it, nearly a year after it opened. I’m glad it got nominated for Roger Bart, who brings an old vaudevillian energy to the show. He and Casey Likes seem to have developed a nice chemistry together and their bits imitating each other provide some nice comic relief. Hugh Cole grew on me, especially in the second act. All the humor is pretty broad but the overall Oedipal dilemma is much funnier than in the movie. It definitely borders on a theme park attraction with bubbles and wind effects, but the overall lighting/scenic inside the Winter Garden is impressive. The music is mostly forgettable but serviceable. It’s not Sondheim and yet, I had a good time. |
