Burnett's burlesque-styled slapstick comedy is similar to Lucy's which did not work in the movie. Mame is a sophisticated New Yorker who drips eccentricity and oozes money and class. Mame is a Bohemian, not a clown. Further, Carol's voice, while loud, is also rougher and coarser which worked for Mattress and Fade Out. Jerry Herman needed a warm singing voice since he originally wrote the score for Mary Martin, and when she turned the show down, Herman pushed for Angela as his favorite.
