If I remember correctly, Jerry Herman was interviewed about Judy Garland and Mame. He wanted her for it and I believe that the two worked together (not formally but off the cuff) and Garland sang some of the songs for him at the piano. This was before Lansbury was cast and the show opened I think. Herman said that Garland was unbelievable and he was in tears. But when he went to the producers they said something like "I know how you feel about this woman. But if she even opens with the show, she will fall apart soon after and she will take the show with her".

I was told a story about Garland trying to sing a Mame number ("If He Walked Into My Life"?) during one of her concerts and screwing it up and stopping. She then said something like "Oh forget it, that's Angela's song".

Also, I think Burnett was more the Gooch type. Except for that high note at the end of her lament which might have been out of her range.
