Audra McDonald is a wonderful actress and a flawless singer but she is completely miscast as mama Rose. She has a very high soprano voice, which really is not meant for the part. Besides the fact that she was a real person and no, she was not African-American. I can hear the complaints. In addition, gypsy has been done to death.

I certainly object to her calling it a flawed musical. A multitude of critics have noted that it has one of the best books of a musical ever and a terrific score. I hope that everyone on this blog who can’t wait to get a ticket instead should get the CD with Ethel Merman. I never saw her do the part, but her singing was absolutely perfect for the part. Audra can sing the hell out of my fair lady where as Miss Merman could not. Will she get a seventh Tony award for it perhaps. I will not be running to see it unless I get a really cheap ticket. I look forward to hearing about the casting of Herbie and all the children.
I enjoyed Audra’s PBS special but I did note that the audience was Lily White and so were the musicians, including her three musicians.
I would wish that Audra would work to develop a theatrical audience that is diverse. It is a shame that often there are more people of color on the stage than are in the audience. My mother always brought us to the theater, and I saw the original hello Dolly and fiddler on the roof and from then on loved the theater
