Because it's a musical cast album. It's also in a context and character that isn't him. Do you think Streisand would have booked 3 weeks at the Palace even on the strength of Funny Girl alone? Has he even performed a song on TV that wasn't from DEH or Parade?

It's not that it doesn't count... it's that it also doesn't exist, he didn't even chart with that. Songs from musicals, even the hits, don't chart high enough and are not usually considered "pop" anyway. The exception here being a mash up released specifically for charity, with a gargantuan pop culture hit musical and a much more famous person than him (doesn't bode well for his solo selling strength)... if it weren't those elements mixing it wouldn't have charted, would it?

It counts for what it is... but in terms of selling well or selling out a 1700 seat theater on the strength of his popularity as Ben Platt, for 3 weeks... it doesn't seem like the cases is there for this being a good business decision, nor will it make him look strong in his career to do that and not sell well, when he probably could have a sold a weekend or possibly a week well and looked good.
