I saw it three weeks ago and I liked it. I've seen many productions since my first one as a teenager in 1971 with Robert Ryan, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Stacey Keach and James Naughton. Nothing's surpassed that one in more than 50 years, but I keep an open mind. In spite of its being overwritten, it's still a great play that I don't tire of sitting through. I thought Brian Cox used his usual bombast to fine effect and he had some quiet moments that I found very touching. Patricia Clarkson gave a truly odd performance. It didn't have any levels. She played it as if in a morphine haze for the whole play which I have to blame the director, Jeremy Herrin, for allowing her to do. After all, she isn't on drugs when the play starts. As one friend of mine put it, "Patricia Clarkson gave no performance at all. She was like a casting Director doing sides with Brian Cox." An exageration, sure, but there's a lot of truth to it. Daryl McCormack had his moments as Jamie, but didn't seem ideally cast and Alex Lawther's Edmund was all wrong. No indication this snively guy was going to mature into Eugene O'Neill. This production did provide a new take on the small role of Cathleen that Louisa Harland accomplished to perfection. She was young and feisty and a bit sexy, which made you imagine the boys chasing her around the house a little bit, even if they have little to zero interraction with her the entire play. The bare set was odd, but didn't bother me. I appreciate any attempt to change things up a bit for a play I've seen so many times. Onward to the next one, I guess.
