I saw the show at Papermill when it was titled The Bandstand. I liked it and felt that it had potential. Three or four of the book songs were weak and unnecessary and were cut and/or replaced by better ones when the show opened on Broadway as Bandstand. However, apparently the Papermill production tried a somewhat different ending at least at certain performances.

At the performance I attended, the epilogue still took place sometime later. Danny, Julia, and the guys are back in Ohio, seeing a movie together. I got the impression it was at a small, intimate venue (like a VFW hall that showed free movies on Friday nights for vets and their families). Anyway, they all seem content with their lives and have come to terms with what happened to them at the contest. When they exit the venue, a young girl comes up to them and tells them how much she enjoyed the band's music at some local party she had attended recently. The band is still together but they have not become big stars on a national level (as portrayed in the Broadway version).

When I saw the show on Broadway, it was greatly improved, the weak songs were gone, the show was tighter and worked better, but the Capraesque ending didn't ring true for me.
