"Your view of Hoffman in Long Days Journey was surprising to me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such sustained agony on a stage. Redgrave provided anguished performance as well. Idiosyncratic but deeply felt."

I didn't like him either. He was fine until the last act, when he just bellowed. I didn't love Dennehy as Tyrone, either (for what it's worth I thought the world of him as Larry Slade a few years later), but agree about Redgrave (especially) and Leonard .

Michael Shannon was a wonderful Jaime. I'm sorry he did not get to do the film with Lange and Harris.
