One of the first shots of this filming is a nine-box split-screen of the cast in commotion. It doesn’t seem to have any point other than to say this is how we filmed this. And that is kind of the problem with this production as a video recording. It doesn’t think about the medium it’s now using. It definitely didn’t recalibrate the performances for the adaptation from stage to screen.

National Theatre often does a great job of bridging the divide between these two mediums, somehow making you feel like you are in a theater yet without every performer playing to the back row. The cameras and edits are thoughtful. It’s not an easy thing to do. I think the Purlie musical did a better job at it. I stopped watching this Purlie Victorious after about 30 minutes. I’ll try to finish and I’d be happy to be wrong and love it when it’s done. But the recent Hamlet on PBS was a better example of how to do this, despite what someone may have thought of the Central Park staging.
