The movie of Chitty Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, on which the stage show is based, came out when I was in 3rd grade so I "had the record" as we said in those days and know all the songs. Sally Ann Howes, whom I later saw opposite Ricardo Montalban in The King and I, stars in it opposite Dick Van Dyke. And two other things to note--Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay for the film and Phil Collins was an extra in it. Anyway, I posted to say that when I saw the Broadway version, I was struck by how deep the bench was--always a pleasure when you see a show on Broadway. Besides RaĆ¹l Esparza, I remember Philip Bosco as the crazy grandfather, Chip Zien as one of the bakers (he doesn't even appear in the second act, as I recall) and Mark Kudisch opposite Jan Maxwell. God, that Chu-Chi face number had everyone howling. I heard Jan Maxwell discuss it at Seth's Chatterbox. She said Adrian Noble had suggested, "Maybe you can play it straight" and her reaction was "You want us to play Chu-Chi face STRAIGHT?" Between Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book (also done on stage a lot in children's theater groups), and all those songs for Disney movies, the Sherman Brothers really are the soundtrack of my childhood. R.I.P.
