I first saw “Illinoise” 3 weeks ago and downstairs,in the Orchestra, is possibly, unless you’re in the first few rows, the worst place from which to view this spectacular piece. I’ve never been crazy about the seats at the St. James; the Orchestra, especially on the sides, can be a nightmare. I’ve never seen a show from there in the last 50 years in which I was comfortable.
Anyway, last night I sat in the front mezzanine and it was as if I was watching a wholly different piece. Every moment resonated. You cannot possibly fully appreciate the spectacular choreography downstairs. Above the stage, you get the full display of brilliance. I got emotional the first time, last night I sobbed through the last 20 minutes. The dancers are mesmerizing, the singers and the orchestra are brilliant.
I pray this musical runs awhile. It’s a Broadway must and my pick for best musical of the season.
