Spectacular.

Beautiful, evocative choreography and wonderful dancing from the entire cast. I love narrative dance pieces like this, and ILLINOISE did not disappoint. The story is tender and sad. Clearly presented so as to engage the audience and yet appropriately ambiguous enough to allow for debate and interpretation. There isn’t a moment wasted in this tight 90 minutes.

Perhaps this show made such an impact on me because I went into it having no familiarity with the music of Sufjan Stevens. I quickly became enraptured by the music in this show and want to give a shout out to the three INCREDIBLE vocalists who breathe life into the gorgeous songs: Shara Nova, Tasha Viets-Vanlear, and Elijah Lyons. I want to see this show again primarily based on their performances. I couldn’t get over how much they added to this piece. It would not have been the same or had such an impact without their beautiful voices.

Great night in the theater for me.
