I like the book, too! I went to college with the composer and book writer/co-lyricist, Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis, and you can fee their Cardiff Giant Chicago improv background throughout the show. And the intellectual silliness also has a lot of our alma mater, U of Chicago, in it. I mean, who else would end a musical on the line "Hail Malthus!"

But speaking of Urinetown (and of "Hail, Malthus!"), I saw the show 5 times at that theater over the police station in the west 50s. It's embarrassing that I don't remember the name. But I thought at the time, wrongly, that they were killing the show by moving it to Broadway. I thought it was too small and way too quirky and intellectual for Broadway, and I wanted it to have a long run off-Broadway somewhere. But in my opinion, it was the beginning of a trend of small, funny, no-fancy-set shows moving to Broadway. Avenue Q and the 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee quickly followed it.
