You might have had to be lucky to see Pinza since he reportedly missed around 50 performances in the first six months and despite published complaints from disgruntled theatregoers, I'm not sure his attendance got better for the last six months. One man wrote to the Times stating that he had been to see the show three times and Pinza was out every time, and that he knew others who had also not seen Pinza. Fortunately, everyone thought his understudy, Dickinson (later Richard) Eastham, was terrific, and Eastham was rewarded with getting cast as Emile in the national tour, and then he had a career in television.
