How and why does the Pulitzer hold just esteem?

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a POV on why the Pulitzer holds such esteem (in multiple categories)? I appreciate that it does and celebrate with those who win -- in fact, a good friend of mine is on a team that won Pulitzer for journalism today. They were absolutely thrilled, of course. But, there are lots of prizes and awards out there -- new and old. Did the Pulitzer always hold such esteem or did it take years/decades for it be regarded as sort of pinnacle of awards in categories like literature, drama and journalism? Note: I understand this question will obviously have subjective responses. Just curious to hear others' read.
