The GYPSY overture is definitely one of my favorites. I would put the overture to MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG up there as one of my faves, too.
The MERRILY overture was played at the start of act 2 of STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S OLD FRIENDS (the West End production that ran late Sept 2023 - early Jan 2024). I saw the recent MERRILY revival about three weeks after seeing OLD FRIENDS and enjoyed it in OLD FRIENDS more. The larger orchestra makes a difference - it just had a fuller sound. |
