I think you made an error in describing the "Lonely Goatherd" song. It was Never sung by Maria and The Mother Abbess. It has always been Maria and the Children. However -- in the stage play it is used during the Thunderstorm (to outshout the thunder). In the movie, they moved "My Favorite Things" to this spot and created the Puppet Show for "Lonely Goatherd".

My other thought to you is WHY would any director want to cut "How Can Love Survive" and ESPECIALLY "No Way To Stop It"? It robs the show of its Political implications. Especially "No Way To Stop It"! Plus it is that song and the Captain's political position that causes the Baroness (and the Captain) to realize that they are not suited to each other. (The movie created the scene when the Baroness decides to leave because she realizes that the Captain is in love with Maria). The stage show is far more political than the movie -- which is a good thing!

Just my 2 cents.
