Last week gross

Was the first full week after opening and it was a big jump to $541k. Probably enough to pay the bills. It’s playing to July 7. I would guess if it wins best play it will open end the run and replace cast as necessary.

I think it was last week. Definitely pre-Drama Desk and Tony nominations. It is running until August 18 at this point.

I missed that.

Could be. But there is relatively recent precedent for that not happening. After “Red” won for best play, it finished up its limited run, never extended or recast.

Red had only two weeks left

And I think it had to be recast. I don’t think stereophonic would be as difficult to recast. As for RED, I think they should have but I guess the producers didn’t want to risk losing the profits by recasting and having the show fail.

Red is an interesting case.

That was the season when Enron was the big hit coming over from London and was widely expected to be a success here as well and sweep the Tonys. When Red started previews in March, I bet they thought their best shot at the Tonys was picking up 1 or both of the male acting awards. They opened in early April and the reviews were very good ... but the flashier Enron was just about to start previews.

Then at the end of April Enron opens and instead of the raves it got in London it is panned across the board and closes just 2 weeks later. Suddenly it's mid-May and Red is the most Tony-nominated play and the front-runner for the top prize. At that point there are 7 weeks left in the run - not much time to find replacements for 2 pretty demanding roles. Add to that the fact that the director, Michael Grandage, was already in rehearsals for his next show in London and therefore unavailable to audition and rehearse a new cast for Red.

I wonder, if Enron had opened and closed earlier in the season, if that would have given the Red team the confidence to have a contingency plan in place for an extension.

I think that Stereophonic doesn't even need to win to move to sell out status (though I believe it will win) It has 13 nominations and bragging rights as the most nominated show ever. it is about a rock band and features rock music well done and well played. I don't know of any commitments anyone in the cast has in terms of films or television series. They are not necessarily that easy to replace since several have to sing and play their instruments to sound like a great band. A good deal of the rehearsal process for this show was music rehearsal. But it is not insurmountable. I think Stereophonic could settle in to a very good run.

I always thought 'Vanya and Sonia' should've run longer

Christopher Durang's ''Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike'' won the 2013 Tony for Best Play in June, but only closed a few months later on Aug. 25.

I always wished they had recast and at least played through the end of the year. Instead, it wrapped up after only 200 performances.

By the way, there's a reading of ''Vania and Sonia'' to benefit Lincoln Center Theater on Tues., May 7, with much of the original cast.

It'll return with Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce and Kristine Nielsen, but David Hull will fill in for Billy Magnusson. (Is Linda Lavin playing Cassandra?)

cast change for Vanya and Sonia benefit

Wayman, thank you for pointing out that there have cast changes for the Vanya and Sonia benefit next week. When the benefit was originally announced, 5 of the 6 original cast members were supposed to participate, but now it's only 3. These things happen, but to me, there's a big difference in feel in having 5 out of 6 cast members reuniting as opposed to 3 out of 6, even though the 3 participants have the largest roles.
