I don’t think that’s allowed. What can and does happen is that nominators recuse themselves (either in specific categories or altogether, I don’t remember) when they have conflicts of interest. But if they miss a show they don’t vote that category (or perhaps don’t vote at all, again I have to check the rules.)

Tony nominators generally have to catch 30-40 shows over a season. Totally doable. Drama Desk nominators cover over 200 shows a season. In comparison there is really no excuse for Tony nominators to miss one. These aren’t people who - like the voters - don’t live in NY and can see things only when they are in the city (so perhaps could miss a short running show through no fault of their own). They see every show.

When I was a Tony nominator from 2007-2010, the rule was we had to see everything. If we missed one show we had to recuse ourselves from the whole season. They are three-year terms. If we did recuse ourselves from a season, we then were allowed on for a fourth season. We also had to recuse ourselves if our spouse or family member was involved in a show in any capacity. I don't know if the rules have changed. In those days there were only 19 of us for two of my seasons and 17 for the third. (In all three seasons there were recusals. I think all three started with 21 on the committee.) Now, I think, there are 50.

All correct! The reason HARMONY didn't get these nominations is that decision makers did not like HARMONY. I certainly didn't like HARMONY, and for a show 25 years in the making, it was still a mess. BAND IN BERLIN which opened and closed quickly at the Helen Hayes (before Second Stage deleted 'Helen') was much better.

Those seem to still be the same rules. From what I can tell, you have to recuse yourself from the entire season if you yourself have a conflict of interest (or if you miss a single eligible element in any show). But if your spouse or family member is eligible, you only need to recuse yourself from that category, not the entire season.

"No member of the Nominating Committee may abstain in any category except as follows: A Nominator must recuse himself/herself from voting in any specific category or categories where there is a direct relation to an individual who is eligible. A Nominator will be permitted to vote in all other categories where this does not apply."

I count 53 names on the Nominating Committee. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they bumped up the number was to counteract the inevitable recusals.

Oh, absolutely, especially if the pool of people they're drawing from are NYC-area theatre professionals. It's a small world. Even with 50+ nominators, it seems like most years would see half or more having to recuse themselves.

I've always wished that they'd reach out to NYC-area theatregoers/fans to assess qualifications of people who love theatre and go regularly and know a lot about it, but who also don't actually work in the industry and don't personally know many, if any, of the potential players. I'd love to spend time doing this. I'm sure a lot of posters here would.

Here is the relevant passage.

A Nominator must recuse himself/herself from the Nominating Committee for any year during their three-year term in the event that any of the following situations apply to him or her: Active participation in a Tony Award eligible Broadway production; Inability to attend a performance of all Tony Award eligible productions in a season: Inability to view a performance of al Tony Award eligible Actors and/or Elements in a season; or Employed by or a Board Member of an organization that has a financial interest in a Tony Award-eligible Production.

So there you have it. If an eligible performer was out of the performance a Nominator had been scheduled to see (which happens ALL THE TIME, trust me), and the Nominator wasn't able to reschedule to see that person, they would have to entirely recuse themselves for the entire season in all categories. That's how serious this is.

The real purpose of the Tonys

While there is often handwringing about the Tonys not recognizing shows that have closed, the real purpose of the Tonys is to advertise shows that are currently playing on Bway.
