I don’t think that’s allowed. What can and does happen is that nominators recuse themselves (either in specific categories or altogether, I don’t remember) when they have conflicts of interest. But if they miss a show they don’t vote that category (or perhaps don’t vote at all, again I have to check the rules.)
Tony nominators generally have to catch 30-40 shows over a season. Totally doable. Drama Desk nominators cover over 200 shows a season. In comparison there is really no excuse for Tony nominators to miss one. These aren’t people who - like the voters - don’t live in NY and can see things only when they are in the city (so perhaps could miss a short running show through no fault of their own). They see every show. |
