| Yesterday, in the Trump trial, the term "estrogen Mafia" came up. It's hard to say if it's a misogynistic remark, or if it has been embraced by feminists. But it makes me think about how the new Bway musical version of The Great Gatsby apparently comes to a crashing semi-halt so Daisy and Jordan can sing a song about the plight of women. Wokeness has replaced dramaturgy. Wokeness has replaced subtlety. Robbins, Laurents and Sondheim (and Bennett and Prince, etc.) wouldn't put up with it. And yet today's creators think the audience and critics will. Last time I checked Show Score a lot of audience members were complaining about preachiness. |
