Exactly. He gets some vocally showy things to do, but even so, he doesn't have that much to sing for a leading character. It's more of an ensemble show. And I'm among those who feel that "Funny" is a misstep and that the ending doesn't work very well. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a good show overall. I just can't imagine almost any actor feeling "Stine is a dream role of mine." Unless the actor is a strong singer and really likes the music he has to sing. But for an actor who is looking for a rewarding role in acting terms, I don't think Stine is it.

I saw both Edelman and his replacement, Michael Rupert. Neither was able to make much of the role. Rupert was much quirkier, but not to great effect. In fact, his line readings were so bizarre when I saw him that sometimes I had to replay the words in my head to understand what the line meant.
