| Regarding the ages, well, it is a concert production. Raines has played Fredrik at least five times before, most recently in 2010 in St. Louis. I must admit that I don't find him the most interesting actor, but he certainly knows the role. (He once played Carl-Magnus also, after he had first played Fredrik.) I agree, generally speaking, that Desiree should be around 45. For one thing, Anne's attempt to be catty by saying to Fredrik that she must be at least 50 makes no sense if she's clearly older than 50. Cariou, although wonderful in the role, was too young in 1973, although he brought it off. (I know some people at the time did feel he seemed too young.) There should seem to be around 25-30 years between Anne and Fredrik, but, yes, not 45. Truth is that few Annes seem 18 so there rarely does seem to be quite that many years between them. Regarding Graham: She's not the first opera singer to play the role, which obviously doesn't need an opera voice. She was the only person whose acting landed for me in the telecast of Dead Man Walking. That doesn't mean she'll act Desiree well, handling dialogue is different than singing and acting in opera, but at least viewed in closeups, Van Hove did not seem to much help the other principals craft well-acted performances. I'm guessing she didn't need his help. |
