So what organisation is producing this concert? The Orchestra of St. Luke's? I had thought Cynthia Errivo was playing Desirée, which to me makes more sense than a 63-year old opera singer. (Ron Raines must be the oldest Frederik ever at 74.) (There's a 45-year age gap between this Frederik and Anne; compared to a nine-year gap between Cariou and Mallory.) (I know it's a concert and Raines is great, but a 45-year age gap is a different story than Bergman and Wheeler wrote.) I do hope we get ALNM with Audra or Kelli sometime in the next few years. They are at peak appropriateness and would both be splendid. I'd even love a production where they alternate as Desirée/Charlotte! I always regret neither Angela Lansbury nor Julie Andrews got a crack at a production sometime in the 1980's. (Happily Judi Dench did, and I'll always treasure her performance.) |
