Glamorous Night
LORNA DALLAS Lorna Dallas, the American soprano, who starred as Magnolia in the record-breaking London revival of Show Boat, starring Dame Cleo Laine, and remained there to star in major musicals such as The King and I, Hello Dolly, and Side by Side by Sondheim will bring her acclaimed London production celebrating the music of Ivor Novello and Jerome Kern to New York this March. Glamorous Night Lorna Dallas sings the music of Kern & Novello will officially open on Wednesday, March 1 at 9:00 PM at The FireBird Cafe (365 West 46th Street) and will have a ten performance run there through March 17. In addition to her musical theater performances (other shows include Kismet, Closer Than Ever and Cole) Lorna went on to have one of the most ambitious and successful BBC series, entitled Lorna Dallas...My Musical World. She has also been a guest artist in all the major concert halls from London to Australia and starred in countless concerts and television specials such as The Magic of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter Centennial Gala, and Night of 100 Stars. In November 1999, Lorna starred with Cleo Laine in the season's most highly anticipated concert, Farewell 20th Century, at London's Royal Festival Hall. Also in the late '90's she recorded four PBS Specials and her own show for the Brownsville Concert Series. In New York she has performed in the famed Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel; appeared at the Town Hall Royal Gala with Cleo Laine; and is a frequent guest at the famed Lyrics & Lyricists Series at the 92nd Street Y. In November 1998, Lorna made her Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops. Her solo album "The Girl I Knew"...the music of Novello and Kern, was released in 1998. Michael Billington, the renowed London reviewer writing for BBC Music Magazine said "In Lorna Dallas, Kern and Novello have found the perfect interpreter!" and here in the States, In Theater Magazine named it as one of the Top 10 CD Picks of the Year. Shortly after the release of the CD she debuted her new show, Lorna Dallas Celebrates the Music of Jerome Kern and Ivor Novello at the grand reopening of the Jermyn Street Theatre in London. The sold-out engagement garnered enthusiastic praise from all the critics. The MAC Award-winning director Barry Kleinbort will direct Glamorous Night for Ms. Dallas at The FireBird Cafe (he was also at the helm for the London stage version) and, once again, joining the team is the MAC Award-winning musical director Christopher Denny on the piano with Bob Renino on bass.
