Regional Reviews: Raleigh/Durham The Christmas Case of Hezekiah Jones Also see Garrett's review of The Rainmaker
Written by North Carolinians Howard L. Craft and Mike Wiley, the story centers in present-day Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the Black community of Northside where Hezekiah Jones (embodied wonderfully by Trevor Johnson) is still grieving the loss of his wife due to COVID-19 complications. He is a maker of hand-made toys, a business model that is slowly fading to big-box stores and online shopping. Up at the North Pole, the wonders of toymaking meets the current realities of corporate infrastructures as the first female to become HEIC (Head Elf In Charge), Silver Bell Sparkle Dash (a delightful Rasool Jahan), tries to prove herself capable as Dizzle Jollyworth (a noteworthy Reez Bailey) wants to finds more challenging work and self-worth. Silver Bell reluctantly gives Dizzle the chance to become human through Christmas and to become Hezekiah's toy assistant in hopes to bring joy back into his life and save the Christmas Spirit. The Christmas Case of Hezekiah Jones is a charming local story of resilience and connection, told with warmth and humor. PlayMakers' regular Kathryn Hunter-Williams directs with a humorous and loving touch. Playwrights Craft and Wiley name drop several Chapel Hill celebrities, from famous coach Dean Smith to former UNC player Michael Jordan. It's a true celebration of Chapel Hill and the legacy of the Black community within. The play celebrates the importance of small businesses. It makes loving references to business that have recently shut its doors like Mama Dip's Kitchen while, at the same time, highlighting current businesses like Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe. As always, PlayMakers' scenic design doesn't fail to impress. Lawrence E. Moten III's design is gorgeous to look at, from the North Pole to the toyshop of Mr. Jones. Lighting design by Abigail Hoke-Brady welcomes the audience with shocks of red and green that appropriately assist the holiday tone. Pamela A. Bond's costumes are festive and fun, and the sound design by Kate Marvin graces audience ears with holiday tunes from past and present. The play may feel slow and long-winded in moments. A plot twist involving the elf Dizzle Jollyworth near the end lacks a satisfying resolution, and the conclusion seems rushed, as if tying things up neatly. Nevertheless, the play remains entertaining, and for those familiar with Chapel Hill, it serves as a heartfelt tribute to this historic town. The Christmas Case of Hezekiah Jones, presented by PlayMakers Repertory Company, runs through December 15, 2024, at the Joan H.
