The Súgán Theatre Company's latest offering is the world premiere of The Gigolo Confessions of Baile Breag which completes Ronan Noone's highly regarded Baile trilogy. For his first two plays he was honored with a 2002 National Student Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (The Lepers of Baile Baiste) and the 2003 Eliot Norton Award for Outstanding New Script (The Blowin of Baile Gall).

I'm only sorry that I'm just catching up with Noone. But perhaps this is the best possible introduction to such a refreshing new writer who understands the power of storytelling, is comfortable with the lyric possibilities of language and doesn't place limits on theatrical expression.

Everyone involved with this production deserves congratulations for this complex, yet seemingly effortless, telling of the story of a young man's enterprising gigolo business in the fictional contemporary Irish town of Baile Breag ("town of lies").

The seamless transitions from present to past and the trading of points of view between Rosie and Paddy is facilitated by Richard Chambers simple set, Daniel Meeker's evocative lighting and, most especially, Haddon Kime's original music and sound design. Even Frances Nelson McSherry's costumes, in all their simplicity, are perfect.

Directed by Súgán Artistic Director Carmel O'Reilly, this is as near perfect an execution of a play as one would ever hope to see. Everything is so well calibrated it's as if she were an invisible conductor on a podium in front of us. (Credit is probably also owed to production stage manager Rosita Hall for the integration and timing of every detail.)

I'm encouraged that Noone was one of the recipients of a Huntington Theatre commission for New American Plays last summer. Hopefully, Boston will continue to be rewarded with the first glimpse of his new works.
