Redwood last night then Sunset Boulevard Matinee..

I started out my shows this week with these two, one made me very very happy and reminded me of why I love theater and one I personally really hated.

Redwood
I understand it’s just my view and others may have the polar opposite thoughts but man, Redwood was plain bad. I love Idina and have seen her in several shows and concerts. I even had a great time at If/Then which I concede is generally thought is as quite poor... This is so underdeveloped. I felt no connection to any character. It has a great message and comes from a good place. However, as someone still mourning a relative I was trying hard to buy into it, it just didn’t move me It felt like everyone was mostly just shouting at each other often for little reason. Jesse wants to climb a tree and each time she wants to, everyone has to scream for a few minutes about it. There are no very good songs, they are mostly quiet bit, quiet bit, sudden belt and more quiet bits. I was thinking if this gets a best musical Tony nomination what could they possibly pick out of this score to perform. A massive waste of talent and expensive staging.

Sunset Boulevard
Nicole Scherzinger really sings the hell out of the songs. I have seen many productions and Normas since the London original. The last show of it before this was the large orchestra version with Glenn Close at the Palace. My favorite lead of the past is Betty Buckley in London.. Nicole is a very different Norma, often playing at the audience via the screens to get a reaction but doesn’t lose sense of the character for me. The whole show is unhinged mostly in a good way. I forget how many bizarre decisions I witnessed but it made me happy. The way they mixed cheeky fun and the darkness of the story makes no sense if you describe it to someone but i loved it. I had a few tears in my eyes several times at Nicole’s singing. For me it worked as a very creative new interpretation of the staging but still sung impeccably.
