Thanks. I had never thought about it before, but I was easily able to make a list of classical singers who would have been deserving but were never honored, although several might still be. I:

Robert Merrill
Roberta Peters
Cornell MacNeil
Frederica von Stade
Marilyn Horne
Giorgio Tozzi
Reri Grist
James McCracken
James Morris
Regina Resnik
James King
Jess Thomas

Some of them are (were) more likely choices than others, whether because of relative fame and familiarity to the general public or for other reasons, but all of them certainly had major careers and would have been worthy recipients. And of those who are still alive, they had better get to Horne and Grist soon if they're ever going to. Although I'm guessing it's unlikely Horne would accept it at the moment and it's hard to imagine Grist accepting it right now. Grist might demur at any time if only because she was based so much more in Europe and lived most of her life there, which might also make her a less likely choice.

At the moment, Renee Fleming and Deborah Voigt also seem obvious choices. People younger than they are have been honored at times.

In any case, Merrill, Peters and Horne not only had distinguished and important careers but were also well-known to the general public, although it's also true that the KC has sometimes chosen relatively obscure people (more in the early years than recently).

Anyone remember that around 20-25 years ago, it was rumored that Horne had cancer and it was terminal and she would not be around much longer?
