I believe a musicians' strike prevented Broadway cast recordings of Love Life and Where's Charley? from happening. As far as I know, the soundtrack to the film of Where's Charley? was never released. PBS broadcast the 1952 film one time in the 80's -- I recorded it on VHS. There are clips of some songs from the 1952 film on YouTube, but I'm not aware of the full film ever being available there. Of course, I could be wrong. A well known label legally released the 1952 film on VHS in the mid-90's in Canada -- it was available at a store near one of the Toronto theaters -- I actually saw it but didn't purchase it. I contacted Leonard Maltin shortly afterward, and he confirmed that it was legitimate. From time to time, non-profit theatre organizations have offered a poor quality DVD version of the film for a donation. From what I've been told the existing prints of the film need millions of dollars of restoration work before the film can get a legitimate DVD/Blu-Ray release. |
