On one hand, there is an undeniable immediacy to a story about the challenges and tribulations faced by those pushing for women's liberation, the expansion of human rights, and an elevated consciousness to the socio-political gender power imbalance. The conceit of the play (this is the very first line -- not a spoiler) is that our play's author is bringing we audience members back to the 1970s, stepping into her mother's life as she quasi-led a women's liberation group in Ohio, so obvious current political connections are made specific and directly (without getting too specific ... no 'Trump' mentioned here, thank god). The performances are excellent across the board, the writing often funny and deeply poignant. Simple and effective design. Would recommend rather than not. However, the play too-often falls prey to trope exposition and cutesy meta-theatrics, whereas a more subtle shift in design and directed-performances between now and past would blur the lines in a more interesting way that credits the audience's ability to make the connections (that are very clear). Wohl would be wise to cut the manufactured conflict between two black women that resolves into a spoken-in-the-text 'White women should stick to writing what they know' Ok, so ... stick to writing that? Performative white guilt is boring (I am white). Small changes that would focus the more interesting and successful aspects of the text. Go see it! |
