Does Nathan's religion or cultural heritage get mentioned in the words or music in Guys and Dolls? I understand that Sam Levene was Jewish and that many of the actors who followed him in the role were also Jewish. And I understand that there is a rhythmic cadence to Runyonese that stems at least partly from a Jewish influence - although as you know Runyon was a gentile from Kansas. Regardless of how successful or unsuccessful Oliver Platt might have been in the role, he doesn't strike me as a particularly outside-the-box choice for Nathan. It's not like they cast Tab Hunter. Platt has an urban, hangdog vibe that seems well-suited for Nathan. By all accounts he didn't have much energy, which does seem like a liability. Do we really need to attempt to shut down conversations with peremptory warnings like "end of story"? |
