Yes, it was. Of course, that was English TV writer Heidi Thomas' rewrite of GIGI, as Lerner was no longer with us. For my money, her changes hurt the property. One of them was to assign "Say a Prayer" (the title was shortened) to Mamita, who sings it about Gigi in the hopes that her first public appearance with Gaston as his mistress--still at Maxims, if remember correctly--will go well. I thought it odd that Mamita--who never liked being a courtesan; didn't make a success of it like her sister, Alicia; and is not wild about the idea for Gigi--would so fervently wish her granddaughter success in the role. I think she would have a more mixed reaction. Of course, you'd need a new song to express that. What people didn't know about that production, and many still don't know when they hear its cast recording, is that someone other than Lerner did a lot of lyric rewrites for it. The producers publicly insisted that all the lyrics were by Lerner, but they were not, which is why none of them were included in THE COMPLETE LYRICS OF ALAN JAY LERNER, published in 2018 by Oxford University Press. Why they didn't credit the additional lyricist is a question upon which I can only speculate. |
