Upon reflection, I think that I was able to see the final Broadway appearances of both Tony Roberts and Linda Lavin back on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019. Lavin and Roberts had agreed to be part of a one-night-only reunion play reading of the 2000 Charles Busch comedy "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife" at Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre as a benefit for the Entertainment Community Fund.
For the performance Busch, himself took on the leading lady role of Marjorie that was originated by Lavin. Meanwhile, Lavin switched roles to play Marjorie's mother, Frieda (created by the late Shirl Bernheim). Roberts returned to his role of Ira the allergist. I remember laughing a lot, and I was so grateful to see most of the play's original cast members.
That same evening was also Angela Lansbury's likely final Broadway appearance, for she was starring as Lady Bracknell in a Roundabout Theatre Company benefit play reading of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."
I remember that Busch got a huge laugh when Marjorie mentioned that the Roundabout Theatre Company was among the many institutions that she personally supported. I'd have to find the play script, but I assumed that Busch altered Marjorie's donor list to allude to the fact that their benefit play reading was in direct competition with another benefit play reading on the exact same night.
