At the Performing Arts Library where I work, we have a video from November 1996, a TV broadcast from the night the CHICAGO revival opened on Broadway. There are brief interviews with celebrities leaving the theater after the show: Mary Tyler Moore, Joanne Woodward, Treat Williams, Chita Rivera, Jennifer Grey, etc. Several people comment on how the time is right for this revival, what with its sharp comments on our justice system; a couple of them mention the then-recent OJ Simpson trial, and how the show seemed to anticipate it in some ways.

When Donald Trump steps to the mike, he expresses his enthusiasm in bland, nonspecific ways: “Great show, fantastic, best I’ve seen in years, the performers were incredible,” etc. He does not make one pertinent observation about the show itself. He could have just seen HELLO, DOLLY! or anything else. So yeah, this is the guy who will be running Kennedy Center. I suppose if he’d seen CABARET, he might have complained about the unfair depiction of the incoming Reich.
