I saw the second preview. I'm a fan of Hunter's plays and of the stories he tells of people separated by money, class, education, sexuality who are trying to build bridges. I find it easy to identify with his characters who are all drowning in a sea of doubt and regret and insecurity and the productions I've seen (Lewiston/Clarkston, A Case for the Existence of God and now Grangeville) have been cast with emotionally rich and intelligent performers who trust that an audience will be happy just listening to two people talk. I found the play deeply moving and Brian J. Smith and Paul Sparks are superb. (I had forgotten that Brendan Fraser had originally been announced and I can't imagine him bettering Sparks' work.)
It was an edifying week for me: I also saw Eureka Day, English and Maybe Happy Ending. Each one gave me optimism about the theatre and about the world, however much angst and fear was bubbling underneath the stories. And they did it with wit and grace and some breathtaking design. |
