Creators connect on TikTok, friends connect on Facebook, and business professionals connect on LinkedIn. Now, at last, theater people have an online community of their own: www.spectra.theater (not dot.com, but dot.theater). The new online community, launched today, is the new digital front door for American theater-makers, and it's a game-changer. For the first time, the American Theater Community can connect on a single online platform that puts live theater at the forefront, encouraging exploration of past and currently running productions, fostering collaboration, and fueling the next generation of theatrical work. It's more than a resource, more than a library, and more than just theater. Spectra.Theater invites users to explore the incredibly rich tapestry of theater productions and the artists that have contributed to them. A virtual watering hole for all corners of the theater community, www.spectra.theater is where theater-makers can engage with all past and present theatrical work, inspiring artists new and seasoned to create for the future. Veteran Broadway artists, aspiring performers, regional theater creators, student thespians, and every kind of theater-maker in between are invited to engage with the largest resource for American Theater data, register their current and upcoming projects, expand their network, and become an early adopter of this innovative technology. Theater ignites from the spark of connection and collaboration. Marlon Brando first came to the attention of Elia Kazan and Tennessee Williams through the Actors Studio. Stephen Sondheim first connected with Hal Prince via mentors, Oscar Hammerstein and George Abbott, at the opening of South Pacific. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul first collaborated in their freshman year at the University of Michigan. Rachel Chavkin and the TEAM theater company connected as a group of six NYU alumni. But for the next generation of great theater collaborators, that initial spark may not be initiated through mentors, training programs, at Sardi's, or even at a theater. That connection can take place online at www.spectra.theater. Connection is simple. Log onto www.spectra.theater. Create a profile and explore. Come meet theater in the digital age. An invaluable resource, www.spectra.theater is already the most comprehensive resource for data about American Theater, directly connecting past, current and upcoming Broadway and Off-Broadway productions to communities that have licensed the same play. Spectra community members can access detailed information about these productions, including those licensable by MTI, Theatrical Rights Worldwide, Concord Theatricals, and Broadway Licensing. Enriched directly by producing theaters as well as the Internet Off-Broadway Database and the Open Broadway Database, this vast archive of U.S. professional, stock, amateur, and school productions is a comprehensive and inclusive database of titles, venues, performers, writers, directors, designers, production team members, administrators, marketing materials, and more. Spectra members are invited to explore the archive, and share additional information about their work. www.spectra.theater is an expansive, online hub that serves all kinds of theater-makers across America. An Artistic Director searching for the perfect summer musical will find the perfect show to please her subscription base. A tech director mounting their first production of Peter Pan can find designers from previous productions to compare notes on Peter's flying rig. An acting student preparing for a role can be inspired by the legacy of the veterans who previously played the role. A creator on TikTok curious about expanding their influence can find a local theater-making community to collaborate with. Spectra is an essential tool for theater-makers conceiving future productions. Theater-making communities are everywhere. If there's an Oklahoma! in Massachusetts, there's no reason Oregon shouldn't learn from it. Spectra wants to connect artists, wherever they create. By giving aspiring artists (and not just those on stage) access to other students, and professionals alike, Spectra is helping usher in innovative storytelling while opening the door for many more digital natives to find in-person community through theater. The site will also connect members directly to the licensor for shows in their catalog. Further expanding the possibilities, any producer can utilize Spectra as a tool to publish their upcoming productions. In addition to reaching potential ticket-buyers, this will make the play and its authors discoverable for direct inquiries from producers and theaters considering future productions. "With loneliness and isolation presenting profound threats to our health and well-being, theater is more important than ever, " says Kim Saunders, CEO of Spectra Media Collective, the parent company and creators of the new website. "Theater, like all live entertainment events, offers social connection, sensory enrichment, and improved mental health – benefits that directly reduce those threats through shared, in-person experiences. But these benefits are only accessible via attention, which digital platforms zealously hoard. Spectra is a digital playground that supports seamlessly integrated theater for audiences and artists, putting live performance as our focus, and enabling theater to compete more effectively in the attention economy." Looking forward Saunders adds, "We are excited to move toward our release of the first mobile Spectra.Theater experience, offering a compelling new approach to managing attention during a live event, allowing early adopter creative teams to integrate in-person and digital audience experiences to dramatically improve the impact of every performance." More updates to come in 2025. Stay in touch with all things Spectra on Instagram and TikTok @Spectra.Theater Spectra was founded in 2022 by the Saunders, a family of Broadway artists, musicians, educators, directors, producers, and technologists. The founding team includes siblings Heath Saunders (Great Comet, Company) Claire Saunders (Sweeney Todd), Trent Saunders (Hadestown, Disney's Aladdin, Dead Outlaw), Alanna Saunders (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), and advisor Blake Saunders (high school music teacher/music director). Leading the team is the mother of the Saunders siblings, Kim Saunders, CEO, a technology executive, author, musician, and producer with 35 years of cross-industry experience. Meet the Spectra team, live and in person, at BroadwayCon 2025, February 8 and 9 at the New York Marriott Marquis. The Saunders Family will be on hand to offer tours of the site, help you create your own personal profile, and answer any questions. Sign up, log in and join the digital theater playground. |
