I was going to respond that we just had a revival of ACL on Broadway, but I realize now that it's been close to 20 years since that production opened. Wow. I love ACL, but my biggest issue with it is that every production is virtually identical to every other production that's ever been. It's a musical frozen in amber. Major revivals are staged by Baayork Lee or Mitzi Hamilton or people trained by them and entrusted with the famous "Bible." And it makes it all less exciting for me because I've literally seen it all before. My idea for a 50th Anniversary celebration would be "A Festival of A CHORUS LINE," where the original staging and choreography is set aside and a group of up-and-coming director/choreographers is chosen to take the material and create their own productions. I would find that so exciting to see all the new ideas that these new artists would bring to the work. I imagine die hard fans would be up to see several productions over a few days and spend time comparing and contrasting. And it would be such a calling card for the directors/choreographers. |
