“Has anyone brought up that there have been toilet stalls in certain places where you needed to drop in coins to gain entrance to use? Or that in certain countries you have to bring your own toilet paper or, lacking that, have to buy some from someone selling it?
"Urinetown" is not too far off the mark in that sense from some history.“

As has always been thus. Not only was it not some invention of theirs, it’s in fact it’s what gave the writer the idea for the musical more than a quarter century ago. Not to take anything away from the show’s accomplishments but they were riffing on pre-existing absurdities, not creating them out of whole cloth.

Again it’s a fun spoof but I felt the need to correct the record since it’s not as if the authors were prophets of some kind, a la the writers of The Simpsons.
From the show’s Wikipedia page:
“Greg Kotis had the idea for Urinetown while traveling in Europe. A traveling student on a budget, he encountered a pay toilet and began writing shortly thereafter.”
