James played Cindy Lou, opposite Dorothy Dandridge as Carmen and Harry Belafonte as Joe, in Hammerstein's musical version of Bizet's ''Carmen.'' James also made her Broadway debut in ''Mr. Wonderful,'' co-starring Sammy Davis Jr. and Chita Rivera in 1956. And she sang the show's title tune.
