Couldn't agree more. Every joke on the tv show essentially distilled to, "You get it, like from MUSIC MAN!" Jesse Green's review in the Times seemed spot on to me: the show caters to die-hard musical fans while offering low-hanging fruit to broadly and widely resonate. For people like me (us), almost every punchline could be seen coming from miles and miles away.
And then BIG GAY JAMBOREE opened last year, and it was basically ... Schmigadoon? Never understood why they doubled down on a conceit that had already had two years of runway on AppleTV+. |
