"There was a major revival in the West End in 2020..." It was a very, very belated transfer of a Donmar Warehouse production from 2014. It played less than two weeks before everything shut down. I saw it, and (allowing for the fact that they were in previews) it was a mixed bag. Vanessa Williams, Rebecca Trehearn (Oolie/Donna), Hadley Fraser (Stine), and Jonathan Slinger (Buddy Fidler) were all superb. Theo James was a bit lightweight as Stone, Rosalie Craig (Bobbi/Gabby) nailed the acting but her singing was unpleasantly shrill, and Nicola Roberts (formerly of Girls Aloud) was a jaw-droppingly dreadful Mallory/Avril (she has a voice, but she can't act and she barely seemed to be awake). Josie Rourke's direction was pretty good, the set was terrific, and the band was very, *very* underpowered (maybe ten pieces). I enjoyed it - I am never going to *not* enjoy a production of 'City of Angels' - but it was nowhere near as good as it could (should) have been, and I'm not all that surprised it didn't come back once things started to reopen. |
